"On 24th of November 2006 sidux was formed by a group of people who strive to do the impossible: Making Debian Sid (aka “Unstable”) stable." Now, 2 years later, while we celebrate sidux' second birthday, it's time to check if we actually kept our promise to you:

sidux security advisory, 2008-11-18

Today, while refactoring the sidux installer, a potential local privilege escalation issue has been discovered, which leaves a copy of the installer's configuration file on the target system. This configuration file also contains the salted MD5 password hashes for root and the first user account (UID 1000) and remains readable for local users. While this does not reveal these passwords directly, it can be used for a brute force attack against them.

Affected releases:
2007-01 Χάος
2007-02 Τάρταρς
2007-03/ 2007-03.1 Γάια
2007-04/ 2007-04.5 Έρως
2008-01 Νυξ
2008-02 Έρεβος
2008-03 Ουρέα

Fix:# find /root /home -maxdepth 2 -type f -name '.sidconf*' -delete

Especially on multi-user systems, it is recommended to change the passwords for root and the first user (UID 1000) as well, this can be done using "passwd" as root/ user.

The cause for this issue has been found and upcoming releases will not be affected.

sidux e.V. is pleased to present to you today the first version of sidux-seminarix here for download. This is a educational project that merges Seminarix with the base of sidux. Seminarix is aimed at schooling teachers as well as pupils with free and open software to make computer training in schools less costly and more effective. The project was initiated in March 2007 by Wolf-Dieter Zimmermann, who works in the education of students for a teaching credential. First based upon Kubuntu, sidux e.V. started to port it to sidux with the help of teachers and interested users. With sidux as a powerfull free and open Linux distribution the Seminarix project now has a fast, easy to maintain and always current base.

sidux-manuals goes Japanese (Nihongo) -ja

The Japanese -ja version of the the sidux Operating System manual with muchan as translator and maintainer hits the sidux site.

Whats more, he did it on his own, and started in November just 5 weeks ago.

The sidux Operating System manual first went live on 28th Dec 2006, so its fitting that muchan representing the Japanese language is the 12th language to be added to mark of the sidux-manuals first aniversary and means that since sidux opened it doors a new language has been added every month!
If printed the sidux OS manual would run to 230+ pages per translation,

The sidux Operating System Manual in Japanese is here

muchan, take a bow, you did it so fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and you did it while taking an active part in all other facets of sidux through #IRC,sidux forums and wiki and other backend testing to ensure the best possble outcome for everyone, Just sensational!
